Electrical And Electronics

About the Department

Brief History of the Department

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a pioneer department of the Plateau State Polytechnic Barkin-Ladi. It was established in 1978 initially as the Department of Electronic Engineering and Physics and saddled with the responsibility of offering Nigerian National Diploma (NND) in Electrical Engineering and a preliminary course in Physics. By 1980, with the creation of the Department of Science, Physics was transferred to the new department. The NND courses were also changed to Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND). The first set of students graduated in 1981. Two years later, the first HND class was also graduated. However, by 1983, due to poor level of equipment in the laboratories and workshops, the HND program was discontinued by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). By 1994 the department introduced a certificate course in Electrical Installation in an attempt to meet the need for such in the community. This course was designed to help practicing artisans in the electrical trade to upgrade their knowledge in electrical technology. However, as at 2010, the enrolment into the certificate course had dropped. Consequently, the department discontinued the Certificate Course in order to replace it with a diploma in Electrical and Electronic Technology. This, however, was not to be despite the concerted resources mobilized to ensure better enrollment, acceptance and continuity. Nonetheless, the Certificate Course had to be discontinued due to poor enrollment.

In the year 2001, NBTE approved the resumption of the HND program after a successful resource inspection. Another NBTE accreditation exercise was conducted between 12th and 14th May 2008, at this time NBTE granted approval for ND, HND (p/m) and HND (e/t) one stream each In February, 2011 a re-accreditation exercise was conducted and approval was granted for the department to continue running the ND and the two HND programs. The last re-accreditation exercise took place on 9th May 2013, it granted approval for ND, HND (p/m) and HND (e/t) two streams each.

From the inception of the Department, the student enrolment has grown from thirteen (13) in 1978 to a few hundred today.
Programmes Offered
Currently, the department offers the following program: -
a) National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
b) Higher National Diploma (HND) with options in:
i. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and
ii. Electrical Power and Machines Engineering.

Moreover, since the last accreditation exercise, significant efforts and substantial resources have been dedicated to enhancing facilities and augmenting the department's manpower. This initiative aims to meet the minimum requirements necessary for the favorable approval to increase the carrying capacity of the programs. The goal is to transition from the initial one stream, accommodating thirty (30) students, to three or four streams for each of the three programs.
This appeal is imperative due to the commendable approval rating of our graduates by employers of labor, the impactful contributions the department makes to the community, and the consistently high numbers of JAMB and HND applications received annually for the department's programs.
Simultaneously, the department has put forth a proposal to collaborate with the Consultancy Directorate of the Polytechnic (Pla-Poly Consult). The proposal suggests the initiation of training programs targeting uncertified industry workers, skilled and unskilled youth, as well as members of the host communities.

The proposed training areas encompass:
a) Electrical Installations and Repair works
b) Trouble Shooting, Repairs and Maintenance of Electronic and telecommunication equipment.
c) Computer networking and installations: PC upgrade, hardware repairs, maintenance. And trouble shooting
d) Electronic Security Systems configuration, installation, maintenance and repairs.
e) Trouble Shooting, Repairs and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment (Generators, Motors, Pumps, Transformers, Refrigerators, Household Equipment etc)
f) Electrical Lines Maintenance and cable jointing
g) Electrical Wiring and Fittings
h) Power System and Power Sub- Station Operations and Maintenance
i) Electrical Machine winding and recoiling.
j) Battery charging
k) Coil Winding
Refresher courses in:
a) Work Place Safety, Equipment Maintenance and Management
b) Engineering Entrepreneurship
c) Engineering contracting, record keeping and reporting
Community-based skill development in:
a) Satellite Installation
b) CCTV and Electronic Security Systems
c) Solar Power installations, repairs and Maintenance
d) Intercom and Telecommunication Services
e) Computer Installations, upgrade, Repairs and Maintenance

g) Domestic electrical wiring and services.

Philosophy of the Department

Aligned with the overarching philosophy of the polytechnic, the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering embraces the following guiding principles:
a) To provide instruction, training and research in Electrical and Electronics Engineering technology as approved by the Academic Board of the Polytechnic and the National Board for Technical Education.
b) To Promote the Development and adaptation of local technology in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology for National Development.
c) To attain world-class status in the training of electrical technicians and technologists who would play leading roles in the frontiers of electrical science and technology.

Programmes Duration

The programs mounted in the department are;
I. ND Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Four semesters with Four months industrial work experience)
II. HND - Electrical Power and Machine Option (Four semesters)
III. HND - Electronics/Telecommunication Option (Four semesters)

Goals and Objectives of the Programmes

In conjunction with the stated goals and objectives outlined by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for all levels of programs, the programs within the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department at Plateau State Polytechnic encompass the following specific goals and objectives:
(a) To train quality and surplus middle-level Electrical and Electronic technology manpower (technicians and technologists) that will play leading roles in the development of the manufacturing, power and telecommunication sectors of the Nigerian economy and beyond.
(b) To develop strong entrepreneurial and innovative leaders who through self-reliance can explore the possibility of harnessing the available energy resources within the locality in order to become robust producers of the products of electrical science and technology innovations and in turn become employers of labour.
(c) To train graduates who are adequately proficient to identify and appropriately advise on the available electrical power potentials and technology needs of their immediate communities; appropriating the available resources and technologies in resolving these needs without compromising ethical, safety and environmental standards.
(d) To keep abreast and be very consistent with the developmental trends in electrical technology and best electrical technology practices
(e) To explore synergy and cooperation with industries and other critical stake holders for relevant information sharing and exchange of expertise.
(f) To promote holistic development of students (ND and HND) through total education that enables them to communicate well, and understand themselves and their environment.

Entry Requirements/Admission

The following are the minimal entry requirements for admission to the program leading to the award of a National Diploma (ND) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering:
i. A minimum of Five Credit passes in WAEC/SSCE/NABTEB. Subjects must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subject at not more than two sittings.
ii. Successful Completion of approved Pre-ND Courses of a polytechnic courses and Similar institutions.
iii. Passing the Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination (JAMB) at the prescribed level for the particular year and having the correct JAMB subject combinations.

For the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, candidates must possess the following:
i. The requirements for ND program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
ii. A minimum of a lower credit ND (CGPA of 2.5-Above) pass in Electrical and Electronics Engineering plus one year of post-ND cognate work experience. or
