The Department of Building and Woodwork Technology was created alongside the Departments of Mechanical and Electrical/Electronic Technology in the 1994/95 academic session out of the Department of Education Technical which was one of the pioneer Departments of the Polytechnic in 1978. The School of Technical Education (STE) was upgraded during the accreditation exercise by the National Commission for colleges of Education (NCCE) in 2004. In January 2004 the Department was moved from Kuru campus (near Government Science and Technical College, Bukuru) to main campus at Heipang. In 2024 the School of Technical Education STE was also upgraded to a School of Vocational and Technical Education SVTE by Management of the Polytechnic by creating of four more departments; Agric. education, Business education, Computer education, and Home Economics education. The department of Building and Woodwork Technology had since its creation two (2) sections; - Building Technology - Woodwork Technology
• To meet the objectives of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) accreditation requirements. • Produce qualify and competent Technical graduates in Building and Woodwork Technology programmes. • Produce competent qualify Teachers and Practitioners of Technical background capable of teaching Basic Technology in Junior Secondary Schools and Technical Colleges. • To prepare Technical Teachers so as to qualify them for a POST – NCE degree program in Technology Education. • To imbue in the NCE Technical Teachers the spirit of entrepreneurship for self-reliance on graduation. • Meet the minimum requirement for registration by professional bodies such as Teachers’ Registration Council (TRC), Nigerian Association of Teachers of Technology (NATT), Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB), etc.
• Introduction of Bachelor of Technology (Education) in the school to include (B. ed. Tech) Building and Woodwork option. • Establishment of Block production unit and other building components. • Establishment of production unit for woodwork products. • Establishment of training programmes for craftsman and artisans working in industries or other companies in order to update their knowledge.
Candidates wishing to offer Technical Education must have credits in WAEC/NECO/NABTEB Examinations in two relevant subjects required for Technical Education which include the following: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity, Basic Electronics, Auto Mechanics, Woodwork, Metalwork and Building Construction. OR WAEC Technical Certificate or equivalent in Technical Trades plus Federal Craft Certificate (FCC) with at least credits in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language. OR A Grade II Teacher’s Certificate (TCII) with credit or merit in five subjects, three of which must be relevant to Technical Education. Credit/merit in English Language and Mathematics are requirements. Note All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the selection examination organized by an accredited body such as JAMB.
