Department History

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in the 1980/1981 academic year. Its creation signified the inception of the first department within the built environment discipline, affiliated with the School of Engineering. This initiative aimed to cater to the unique requirements of technical students and craftsmen aspiring to pursue careers in this field, thereby serving as a pioneering department for the School of Environmental Studies. From its inception, the department has welcomed faculty staff members from beyond the state and even internationally, including western Nigeria and Ghana, to enhance the department's academic quality and professional standing. Shortly after its establishment, the Department received full accreditation from the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE), enabling it to award National Diploma certificates.

To date, the department has seen the graduation of twenty cohorts of students. Many graduates have advanced their education in other institutions offering Higher National Diploma or Bachelor of Science/Technology degrees, while others have successfully integrated into various professional sectors.

Initially, the department operated out of temporary spaces within the science department. However, it now boasts dedicated facilities, two blocks with offices, studios, Model Workshop and Photography Studio designed to support an optimal working and learning environment. Efforts to bolster faculty development have seen some teaching staff pursue further studies, with two currently undergoing training. The current staff composition includes both teaching and non-teaching members, reflecting a comprehensive educational support system.
