About the Department
The department of science was first established in 1981 by the polytechnic with the sole objectives of producing skilled Technicians and Technologists. The programmes carried out in the department include: (i) National Diploma in science laboratory Technology (ii) Higher National Diploma in Applied Chemistry (iii) Higher National Diploma in Chem/Biochemistry (iv) Higher National Diploma in Physic/Electronics (v) Higher National Diploma in Microbiology (vi) Higher National Diploma in Bio/Microbiology The qualification for admission to study National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology is (i) Having JAMB score of 150 and above with at least five credit in Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. For all the HND programmes the entry qualification is a National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology with a minimum of lower Credit and one year of Industrial Attachment. Students with pass in ND are admitted after two years. Students, who gain admission in the department pay their school fees, register at the ICT and subsequently with the department. The department has grown tremendously in the number of Student enrollment. It has graduated students that meet the manpower needs of many industries, research Institutes and many related organizations both locally and nationally. An assessment of the products of the Department revealed that most of them have high level of discipline and commitment in their various places of work. The Department has over the years acquired highly specialized scientific equipment such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, (AAS), Infra-red (IR) Spectrophotometer, High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) among others to enhance research. Many staff of the Department have been trained (6 PhD) and are being trained (3 PhD) both within the country and overseas in different areas of specialization.
