About the Department


Introduction

Mining and related activities contributes one of the highest GDP in economics of most countries. Therefore, training of personnel from the lowest to highest levels to man the industry cannot be overemphasized. It is in line with this objective, the Plateau State Polytechnic run this special training program to feed the Mining Industry in Nigeria with the necessary manpower.

Brief History of the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Engineering

The Department was established in May, 2002 during the tenorship of Dr. Stephen Mallo’s as Rector. Academic activities commenced in October, 2002 with first set of Pre. ND/Program. The first set of the National Diploma Program graduated in the year 2004/2005 academic session.
The Higher National Diploma Program commenced in the year 2005/2006 academic session with program options in: (1) HND Mining Engineering Technology, and (2) Mineral Processing Engineering Technology. There is plan on the way to mount another Higher National Diploma Programs in: (1) Geological Engineering and (2) Petroleum Engineering.

Mission Statement

To train high technologically skilled and knowledgeable middle level manpower for the mineral exploration and mining industry in Nigeria.

Entry Qualification/Requirements

Requirement: Candidate must register and write the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in English language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. The candidate must obtain credits in English language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
Generally, the candidate must have a minimum of 5 credits in not more than 2 sittings in either WAEC, NECO or NABTEB examinations.
