About the Department


BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department came into existence as a unit in 1997 under the Department of Social Development where it offered the following courses;
1. Diploma in Library Science (DLS)
2. Senior Library Assistance (SLA)
3. Assistance Library Officer (ALO)

These programmes where run as one academic session while the diploma course for two academic sessions. However, in 2009 the nomenclature of the programmed was change from diploma in library science to library and information science, while SLO AND ALO were taken over by Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC). The department came into full-fledge in the year 2010 under the School of General Studies (SGS).

The department which was operating in Jos Campus finally moved to the Main Campus in 2018 under a new school, i.e. School of Information and Communication Technology.

On the 20th to 23rd May, 2018, the Department was granted an interim accreditation with stream of thirty (30) students. Activities commenced fully in January, 2018 with National Diploma.
Furthermore, on the 25th to 27th March, 2024, the Department got full accreditation.

PROGRAMME

The department is currently running National Diploma (ND) in Library and Information Science.

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide equitable access to information, foster lifelong learning, and support the creation, organization, preservation and dissemination of knowledge through innovative, inclusive, and user-centered library and information science.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Candidates for admission into the National Diploma (ND) programme should have at least five credits/merit level passes at not more than two sittings in WAEC/NECO/GCE (O/L) /NAPTEB certificates which must include English language, mathematics and any three relevant subjects.

GOALS

The goals of the department are;
1. To produce diplomates with knowledge and skills to actively participate in provision of effective or efficient information services to meet the diverse information needs of the society in two years of their training.
2. To enable students utilize information and communication technology (ICT) in information handling.
