The Department is one of the five Departments in the School of Vocational and Technical Education of the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi. The Department became operational as an autonomous Department in January, 2005. Prior to this time, the Department was merged and run jointly with the Department of General Studies (Technical). Following the advice of the NCCE visitation team in December 2004, the Education Department and General Studies Department were thereafter split into separate Departments. This thereafter gave rise to the Department of Education. The Department essentially services all the other Departments in the School of Vocational and Technical Education (STE).
I] To produce qualified technical teachers and practitioners of vocational and technical background capable of teaching Basic Technology in junior secondary schools and Technical colleges. II] To produce vocational and technical NCE Teachers who will be able to inculcate scientific, vocational and technological attitude and values in society. III] To produce qualified NCE teachers, to start the much desired revolution of vocational and technological development right from the Nigeria schools. IV] To prepare teachers so as to qualify them for a two (2) year post NCE degree programmes in vocational and technical colleges and universities Nigeria and other parts of the world.
The Department of Education performs functions of organizing and Coordinating Teaching Practice and other activities for students, as follows: 1. Placement of Teaching-Practice students in various Secondary Schools for Teaching Practice experience every year. 2. Organizing Teaching-practice Orientation for Staff and Students in the School, prior to the subsequent field work held periodically. 3. Organizing and after wards compiling and computing Teaching-Practice Time-Table/results. 4. Organizing/coordinating Micro-Teaching Practicals for staff and students of the SVTE. 5. Collation of Teaching-Practice Time-Table from various secondary schools where students are posted for Teaching-Practice Experience. 6. Organizing Teaching-Practice Supervision for staff and thereafter, collate compute the results. 7. Organizing and engaging External Examiners to vet programmes. 8. Organizing and planning of Orientation programmes for newly admitted NCE I students, at the beginning of every academic session. 9. Teaching of all Education courses for all students (NCE I, II, and III) of the SVTE. 10. Procurement of Instructional Materials for the Center for Educational Technology (C.E.T) laboratory, Library and for other needs in the Department.
