In recognition of the fact that Nigeria has huge agricultural potential and substantial natural resources that can make agriculture the bedrock of Nigeria’s development in a substantial way, the department of Agricultural Technology will be established to impart knowledge to students and equip their with skills in modern techniques of agricultural production. This is because agriculture has been recognized as the fundamental instrument for sustainable development and a means of rural transformation.
In acknowledgement of the fact that Agriculture has the potential to be the industrial and economic springboard from which Nigeria's development can take off, there is a need to establish the Department of Agricultural Technology in the Plateau State Polytechnic. Since most of the foundation staff of the Department would be from Agricultural Engineering, Polytechnic Management can make domicile the department in the School of Engineering Technology (SET) in the interim in view of the absence of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology in the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi. The department will run programs leading to the award of a national diploma (ND) in Agricultural Technology.
1. To produce agricultural technicians who are self-reliant, skilled and capable of adopting modern techniques in agricultural production.
2. To equip students with basic skills that will enable them to contribute positively to solving the ever-complicated problem of food security.
3. To foster creativity in understanding the social, economic and technical contents of general Agriculture as well as disseminate improved practices of new agricultural techniques to farmers.
4. To prepare students for the pursuit of various careers in agriculture and assumed positions of responsibility in public institutions and private organizations.
The Department of Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering, Plateau State Polytechnic, came into existence in 2008. The department was established because of the increasing demand to revitalize the agricultural sector of the economy and to provide the needed knowledge and skills that will propel the agricultural sector in sustainable research and food production. Students wanted admission into the polytechnic to lead Engineering science courses, and for administrative conveniences. The Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering Department currently offers National Diploma (ND) in Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering.
Sequel to the resource inspection carried out by the NBTE from 12"' to 14"’ of May, 2008. The board approved the commencement of national diploma (ND) agricultural engineering technology with effect from 1st October, 2008. The department started with 13 students in its first year of establishment 2008/2009 session. Subsequent admissions were made in successive sessions till date. Initial accreditation visitation for the department was done from 23rd to 26" November, 2011 by the NBTE. The department was granted accreditation on the 31st January, 2013. The department has kept tract with admissions and graduation of students till date. The departments' National Diploma programme passed the recent 24t'i — 27t" April, 2024 re-accreditation Exercise with two streams approved for the programme.
The Department currently offers a two (2) years - National Diploma (ND) - programme in Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering.
